Antonio Plá Ferrándiz, our history
For one hundred and forty years, people in Reus have trusted the quality of Antonio Plá Ferrándiz nougat. In the stores at Arrabal de Santa Ana 6 and Llovera 26 street, the people of Reus and residents of nearby towns buy the know-how, the quality of the almonds from our environment, the rosemary honey from Jijona, and the extensive experience that Ángela and her husband, now the fourth generation, inherited and pass on to their daughters.
Our customers trust us generation after generation, with the purchases with grandparents, parents, and grandchildren all at once being a tradition, as well as the marzipan puppy snacks, the anticipation of seeing the same shop assistant each year, as they trust in her expertise and memory, the selection of gifts for their uncle, and, for years now, the ordering of Christmas hampers for companies, friends, relatives, and anyone who enjoys the tradition of the supreme quality of our establishment.
Antonio Pla Ferrándiz is synonymous with supreme quality, a category only given to those who know how to combine the best of the land with the most ancestral tradition. Antonio Plá Ferrándiz is a member of the Regulatory Council of Jijona and Alicante nougat, a fact that guarantees the quality and authenticity of our products.
The people of Jijona have been mainly dedicated to selling nougat throughout Spain for about two hundred years. Antonio Plá Ferrándiz belongs to this generation of semi-nomads. In 1885, his destination, along with other nougat makers, was Reus, the capital at that time of hazelnuts, brandy, and modernism. Both then and now, the center of Reus was a highly sought-after place to do business. Such was the competition that merchants even fought over the entrances to houses. Antonio Plá was not unlucky, since, although he did not find a store, he was able to set up in one of these entrances, at number two of the central Plaza de Prim, no less, although the following year he moved to Arrabal Santa Ana 6, where he continued to sweeten Christmas in Reus, along with other nougat makers located in other entrances.
The manufacture of nougat continued, with the same formula, by his grandson José Verdú Plá, who registered the brand and formula with the name of his grandfather, Antonio Plá Ferrándiz. Proof of this was the photograph of Mr. Antonio as an old man, a photo that has become the image of the brand.
Mr. José and his family continued with the manufacture of nougat, sweets, and preserves that they already sold from All Saints’ Day until Epiphany. The time came for Mr. José and Mrs. María, his wife, to retire, bequeathing the formula and stall to their daughter Ángela.
The stall proved insufficient, so they acquired the premises at the same number 6 of Arrabal de Santa Ana in 1973.
Much work, service, and quality led them to open a new store on Llovera 26 street in 1984, where nougat and artisan ice cream of supreme quality are served.
