On October 11th, in the middle of nougat “season”, the members of XICS and other nougat-loving friends left their workshops to meet at the House of Culture and listen to Lluís Garrigós Oltra.
This chemist by training and historian by passion enlightened us about the history of nougat. He went back to ancient times, around the year 1000, when sugar had become a reference for exchange; he also spoke of Popes and conspiracies, aristocrats and confectioners.
He continued the story with the history of many families who supplemented their agricultural or similar activity with nougat making. He transported us to times past when, without technology or the internet, knowledge and discoveries were already being shared, where adapting the product to the needs of the consumer was vital for survival, and where, ultimately, necessity was turned into a virtue.
